Motorola and Ericsson were the major players initially. Mobile phones were initially the size of walkie-talkies. A visible feature were the antennas, some with retractable, really long antennas. 

Nokia was the first to come with an internal antenna. With better UI and sleek design (for that time !!), they dominated the feature phones market.
