90's Countdown Shows
In 90's there were only two shows telecasting bollywood songs, and those two were there from long time. Chitrahar, first telecasted in 1968 and Rangoli, first telecasted in 1989. Both of these shows used to telecast old songs and not the songs from unreleased/latest movies.
First countdown show in history of Indian TV, Superhit Muqabla, was started in 1992 on DD National and DD Metro. This show was hosted by some greats of that era and some new comers. To name a few, Baba Sehgal, Ekta Kapoor, Krutika Desai, Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Chunky Pandey. Top 10 songs were decided based on the public votes which were casted by sending a postcards (snail mail- as there were no emails/sms/mobile phones).
Then came Philips Top 10, hosted by Pankaj Kapoor and Satish Kaushik. Philips Top 10 was telecasted on Zee TV from 1994 - 1999. The show used the chart ratings collected by MIL (Association of Music Labels India). Philips Top 10 was later hosted by Baba Sehgal and Javed Jaffery.
After taking inspiration from Philips Top 10, there were multiple shows launched across TV Channels. Ek Se Badhkar Ek on DD National was one amongst them which got popularity. Ek Se Badhkar Ek was directed by Mukul Anand (Director of many Hits, Hum, Agneepath are few among those). After Mukul Anand's death it was directed by Ravi Chopra (Director of Baghban, Baabul). The show had Kartika Rane, Tiku Talsania, Ravi Baswani (Jaane Bhi Do Yaaroon fame) in lead roles and Asrani and Jagdeep in supporting roles.
Then came On Public Demand by Roshan Abbas on EL TV (Zee's another channel in initial days of cable TV which used to telecast only Sponsored shows - producers have to pay to telecast). The exact year of launch is unknown but it was somewhere in 1996-97. The show gained huge popularity and it was hosted by Roshan Abbas and Ritu Chaudhary aka Mahima Chaudhary - Yes Mahima Chaudhary's real name was Ritu, which was changed by Subhash Ghai when she was casted in Pardes. Subhash Ghai was superstitious about launching a new actress- Initial of her name should be "M" - Manisha Koirala(Saudagar), Meenakshi Sheshadri(Hero), Mishti(Kaanchi).
